How to Choose Curtain Fabric: Start with Free Samples at Home

Choosing fabric is one of the most enjoyable parts of ordering custom curtains. Your curtains will sit alongside your walls, flooring and furniture, so a fabric that looks beautiful online should also feel right in your own room.

At SAG Custom Curtains, we encourage you to start with free fabric samples before placing your curtain order. Seeing and touching the fabric at home can help you choose with greater confidence.

Here is how to explore our collections and make the most of your samples.

Explore Our Curtain Collections

You can browse SAG Custom Curtains by fabric type, decorative style or practical needs. Some collections overlap—a patterned fabric, for example, may also belong to a linen or cotton collection. Always check the individual product description for fabric composition and available options.

All Drapes and Curtains

Start with All Drapes and Curtains if you would like to explore the full selection. Compare colors, textures and designs before narrowing your choices to a few favorites.

Blackout Curtains

Explore Blackout Curtains when light control is an important part of your decision, particularly for bedrooms. Review each product’s construction and lining options, as the finished result also depends on how your curtains are fitted around the window.

Linen Curtains

Explore our Linen Curtains collection for visible texture and a relaxed appearance. Compare individual fabrics to find the weave, color and composition that suit your space.

Cotton Curtains

Browse our Cotton Curtains collection and request samples to compare the feel, weight and texture of your favorite fabrics alongside your furnishings.

Velvet Curtains

Discover our Velvet Curtains collection if you are drawn to a plush surface and a richer visual effect. Check your samples in different lighting, as the direction of the pile can affect how the color appears.

Solid Color Curtains

Solid Color Curtains are useful when you want to coordinate with existing furniture, artwork or a patterned rug. A single color can still offer plenty of interest through its weave and surface texture.

Floral Curtains

Browse Floral Curtains to introduce botanical designs into your room. Consider how the colors and scale of the flowers will work with your other furnishings.

Embroidered Curtains

Our Embroidered Curtains collection offers decorative detail through stitching and texture. Examine samples up close, and use the product photographs to see more of the overall design.

Patterned Curtains

Explore Patterned Curtains if you would like your window treatments to add visual interest. Compare the pattern’s scale and contrast with the size of your windows and the other designs in the room.

Commercial Flame-Retardant Curtains

For commercial projects with specific fire-performance requirements, explore Commercial Flame-Retardant Curtains. Before ordering, contact us to confirm the documentation available for your selected fabric and whether it meets your project’s requirements.

Start with the Feeling You Want for Your Room

Before settling on a fabric, think about how you want the space to feel.

Would you like a light, airy bedroom, a warm and welcoming living room, or a more formal dining room? A softly textured neutral can create a quiet backdrop, while a deeper color or patterned fabric can make your windows a focal point.

Consider what is already in the room and what you plan to keep. Your sofa, rug, flooring and wall color are useful starting points. Curtains do not need to match everything exactly, but they should work comfortably with the overall palette.

Compare Fabric Colors in Your Own Lighting

Online photographs are helpful for narrowing your choices, but screens and lighting can affect how colors appear. A white fabric may look warm beside one wall color and cooler beside another.

When your samples arrive, hold them near the window where your curtains will hang. Look at them:

  • In morning and afternoon daylight.
  • In the evening with your usual lamps switched on.
  • Beside your wall, sofa, rug and flooring.

Position the samples vertically where possible. This gives you a more useful impression than leaving them flat on a table.

Use the physical samples in your room for your final color decision.

Look Closely at Texture and Pattern

Color is only part of the decision. Texture can bring warmth and depth to a room, even when the fabric is a simple neutral.

Examine the weave up close, then step back to see how noticeable it is from across the room. Think about whether you want your curtains to blend into the background or introduce more visual interest.

For floral, embroidered and other patterned fabrics, use the sample to assess color and texture, and refer to the product photographs for a broader view of the design. A small swatch may show only part of a larger pattern.

Think About Privacy and Light Control

The appearance of a fabric and the amount of light your finished curtains allow through are related, but they are not the same decision.

Ask yourself what you need from the room:

  • Do you want to soften daylight while keeping the space bright?
  • Is evening privacy a priority?
  • Do you need greater light control for sleeping?
  • Would a combination of sheers and lined curtains suit the space?

Review the available lining options for your chosen fabric. A small unlined sample cannot show exactly how a full curtain with lining will perform.

If you are unsure, tell us how you use the room and the level of light control you would like. We can help you review the options.

Narrow Your Choices Before Ordering

Once you have compared your samples, choose your two or three favorites and leave them in the room for a few days. Notice which one continues to feel right as the lighting changes.

Before placing your order, confirm your measurements, curtain heading style and lining selection.

For a first order involving several windows, you may prefer to begin with one window so you can see the finished result before ordering the rest.

Request Your Free Fabric Samples

You do not have to make every decision on your own. If you are deciding between fabrics, send us a photograph of your room along with the fabric names you are considering. Our team can help you narrow your selection.

Explore our curtain collections and request free fabric samples to compare at home. A $3.50 handling and shipping fee applies to each sample order.

If you need help choosing fabrics or would like to request additional samples, reply to your sample confirmation email. Our team will be happy to assist you.
